A Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, Dr. Azadeh Khajavi received her BS from Portland State University and DMD from Oregon Health Sciences University. Certified in full mouth reconstruction by the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, Dr. Azadeh Khajavi has performed several implant procedures over the course of her career.
After the loss of a tooth, a dental implant can provide a patient with the opportunity to smile, talk, and chew normally. The process begins with an exam and the subsequent placement of the implant, a titanium structure that the dentist introduces surgically into the bone. This method then encourages the bone to grow around the implant, which replaces the root structurally and preserves the bone.
The fusing of the bone and implant provides a solid foundation for the replacement tooth. Fusing most often occurs over a few weeks, after which the dentist attaches a custom crown to the replacement post. Once the crown settles, the patient typically experiences a return of normal function. As long as the patient cares for the new tooth, he or she can reasonably expect it to last throughout his or her lifetime.
